The University of Sheffield proudly celebrated its 100th anniversary as a university in 2005, although its full history dates back to the foundation of the School of Medicine in 1828.
Home to 25,000 students from over 120 countries, all studying on cutting-edge programmes, Sheffield graduates are in demand the world over.
Ranked 8th in the UK, 20th in Europe and 69th globally in the rankings of the world’s top 500 universities (Shanghai Jiao Tong Index 2006), Sheffield has a long-established reputation for excellence.
As well as Shanghai Jiao Tong, the leading US publication ‘Newsweek’ also recognizes Sheffield’s excellence. In their top 100 ranking, the University is placed 9th in the UK, 18th in Europe and sits along with the very best universities in the world.
Subject excellence:
The University’s individual subject rankings are outstanding. We have 29 subjects that are rated as ‘excellent’ in the latest teaching Quality Assessment, which means we rank 3rd among UK universities.
Research is also renowned at the University and our rankings are consistently high. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (2001), of the 48 subjects assessed, 35 were identified as being of national or international excellence, placing Sheffield 6th in the UK. Whether in teaching or research rankings, Sheffield can demonstrate excellence in subjects as diverse as business, dentistry, engineering, architecture, biomedical sciences, politics and law.
